I started pottery last year and became obsessed, but soon grew frustrated by how inaccessible and expensive it is. After taking 2 courses of classes at a studio, I wanted to start making at home. But that is where the challenges started.

The biggie...no kiln. If like me you don't want to commit to a studio, or don't have the space or money for your own kiln, the only option is to hire a full kiln load. At the studios in East London this was around £90 and you have to wait for up to 4 weeks for collection.
Then there is the glaze issue. After spending way too much money ordering full size jars of glazes that didn’t come out as expected, I couldn’t understand why there wasn’t somewhere in London where you could see test tiles from a number of glaze brands in one place or even get samples. You wouldn't buy an entire pot of Dulux to test out the colour on your wall, you buy a sample pot. Why can’t the same be the same for pottery glazing?
Then deciding on which clay is best, which tools are essential, and so on.
